Paddy’s Palace Derry
This award winning hostel is located in the heart of Derry and is perfect for visitors of all kinds. The graceful lounge, complete with a grand piano and large fireplace, is ideal for social gatherings after an exciting day of sightseeing.
Paddy’s Palace Derry was completely renovated in 2013 and now features a modern kitchen, state of the art showers, and high speed internet access. The hostel has been rated number one on TripAdviser and by American travel guru Rick Steves, while Lonely Planet has applauded the comfort, centrality, and friendliness of the hostel as reasons to stay here.
Aside from the convenience of our central location, within easy reach of the city’s main historic attractions, and the hospitality of our staff, you can expect a fine meal here every night of the year at 19:00.
Guests and members of staff come together around the handmade dining table of Irish oak wood and have a great dinner with your fellow backpackers, saving you money and allowing you to have some fun with friends old and new.
Everything about this hostel, which is managed and owned by those with as much of a passion for travel as you, aims to ensure you enjoy a safe, clean stay in the middle of Derry, where the friendliness of the locals and our staff will ensure you get to experience the beauty and rich heritage of this historic city the way it was meant to be.
The Derry Palace Hostel is located just minutes from all of the central attractions and shopping areas on foot. From here you can explore the four hundred year old walls of this city and it’s only 10 minutes from the bus station. A supermarket, coffee shops, and some of the city’s finest traditional Irish musical pubs are located even closer. Other nearby highlights include museums and the political murals from the Troubles.
Derry-born guide Steve McPhilemy and the other staff at this hostel have been giving visitors a uniquely warm and Irish welcome for a decade and the hostel was been featured on national TV as a place offering quality accommodation and a fun, vibrant place to stay in the heart of the city of Derry. Given Steve’s background, it’s no surprise he and his team of fellow travel lovers will more than happy to help you with any questions you might have about the city.
This isn’t just any hostel, as we’re located in a stunning Georgian era townhouse which was constructed in 1832. Our guests are encouraged to sit back and enjoy a movie in our DVD room or browse our sizable travel library beside a cosy fireplace. Traditional fuels such as turf and peat are burned on the fire, and you’ll find the room filled with the unmistakable aroma of the Irish countryside, a welcoming custom which many hostels have abandoned in recent years.
Our recent renovations to the property, including new electric showers with warm water day or night, and a pleasant modern kitchen, are enhanced by the careful restoration of the hostel common room. Comfortable chairs and a grand piano make this an ideal spot relaxing alone or as part of a group. You won’t need to spend long here, listening to the chatter or your fellow travellers, to realise why this is the most popular feature of our hostel.
We do our utmost to ensure that all of guests are treated to top quality service during their stay and some of the conveniences we offer include towels, linens, duvets, personal lockers, and free tea and coffee throughout the day. Free maps, tourist information, and free access to our guide books from around the world are available, and we’ll store your luggage for free too.
Other amenities include free Wi-Fi internet access, a delicious free breakfast, free car parking, free bicycle use, and free access to pianos, guitars, and other musical instruments.

3. We’re located across the road from a police station and offer our guests personal lockers, meaning you won’t need to worry about security.
4. Laundry facilities are available for any of guests in need of them.
5. A covered and heated outdoor courtyard area is used for outdoor dining and BBQs during the summer months and cuddle-ups on cool winter nights.
This is the only hostel in the city of Derry to be recommended by top US travel adviser Rick Steves and we’re also favourable rated by Lonely Planet, Guide du Routard, Let’s Go, and Rough Guide. The Derry Palace Hostel is also the top rated hostel in Derry on Trip Advisor.
Our hostel has won the Best Tourist Accommodation award from Derry City Council in 2007 and Lonely Planet commented in 2013 that “this hostel is central, comfortable, and as friendly as they come.”
While we hope you enjoy your visit to Ireland, we know the importance of being connected to the rest of the world during your travels. As such we’ve introduced high speed fibre optic broadband throughout the hostel (with download speeds of 80mb). You can connect to our Wi-Fi network from the bedrooms, public areas and common room, garden, and courtyard.
Free-to-use laptops are also available for our guests in the common room in case you don’t have your smartphone or other internet enabled device with you.
Our hope is that you’ll come to love Derry as much as we do during your stay.
Stag and hen party bookings will not be honoured, no exceptions.
